Notes on - Doctor Who: Flux, Chapter Two: War of the Sontarans

War of the Sontarans notes

Opening with the cloister bell and no visual was a strong start

What is that house that looks like the poster for Cabin in the woods.

The Doctor says end of the universe.

Doctor, Yaz and Dan all woke upk in the crimean with no idea what happened when they hit the flux.

They’re assuming they bounced off the flux and got kicked back in time.  Is that really true

Mary thinks they’re battlefield scavengers

Mary:  Doctor’s a mans term

Doctor:  It’s fluid

1885 Crimean war

Mary Seacole?

She doesn’t know the word Russians.  The Russians have been substituted by the Sontarans.

I don’t love the new design

A Sontaran on a horse is cute though.  Did Linx ride one?

Vinder’s escape pod has ended up where…?

Are you response.  Canm you repair?  The flux impacted the inner temple.  What does any of that mean?

Priest Triangles.  Interesting

The Mouri are the people in the circle and they’ve been damaged by the flux.  Probably deliberately by Swarm

I like the Mouri costume design

The British Hotel.  I bet this is all historically accurate

Dan is asking questions we haven’t heard companions ask before.  And now he’s fading away.

This is a lazy way to split the companions up.  Or is it efficient?  They’re falling through space and time because of the collision of flux energy and vortex energy

Neat gimmick that the TARDIS door is missing

Dan’s house being gone is a nice visual cue to confirm he’s in the real world.  Why doesn’t his neighbor invite him in if he’s worried about Dan being out after curfew?

Where is Di, now she’s mentioned?

I bet if you know what that stadium is that that image is really powerful

How did Dan’s mum and Dad find him that quick?

A universal GPS would be useful

Wait, how did Williamson get here??

Yaz uses good interrogation techniques

So Williamson ended up here not too klong after we saw him last episode.  Is this what he was building?

Or is this before his building?

WWTDD – cute.  It’s pretty much been implied forever

Lieutenant General Logan of the Light Division

Logan: Madam, I am at work!

The Doctor: I know, I can smell the rum.

Russia is now Sontar on the map

*** War is the opposite of normal

The name Russia is ringing a bell.

If this is the first Sontaran attempt to change history how are they already Russia on the map

The Lieutenant doesn’t know where the sontarans are coming

Logan:  I have queen and country on my side.  That will be enough.

The Doctor:  She here with you now then, the Queen?

Doctress.  Sexism.

Dan Starkey!  That both helps and detracts

I like that they’re teaching us about Mary Seacole.

They nicely plant that Mrs. Seacole tracks things accurately and the seven and a half minute rest provides the solution later.

Mrs. Seacole:  Cannonball in the back.

The Doctor: Ooh, I bet that hurt.

Sontaran:  There is no such thing as pain!   A little.

The Doctor, selling info on the Doctor because it doesn’t occur to the sontaran that The Doctor might be female.

Mary Seacole isn’t taking any shit from Logan

The SOntarans are hidden behind a camouflage shield

The Doctor asks Mary to monitor the encampment and take notes.  That’s very Doctorish

Commander Skaak.

Killing Dan Starkey does feel quite transgressive

Dan’s been gone two days.

Ah, the Krvanistra ships caused an eclipse.  I thought they might

Cute exchange about whether it’s necessary to call it a probic vent

Why did the Sontarams start in Liverpool?

Has to have something to do with whatever Williamson wasa building, right?

I like Dan’s parents

The solomn way he gave Dan the wok!

Wait did Yaz just say she is still with the police

So when you step close to the mouri you flip from before to after

The triangle said it’s the temple of Atropos

The Temple of Atropos on the planet Time.

Really?  All time flows through here to keep it from getting out of control.  Interesting

Priest:  Time is… evil.

What’s the Doctor pulsing for?  Oh, to signal them to come to parlay

Convenient that them being clones you can just have two actors play every significant role

The Sontaran have a psychic command.  Interesting.

So they just took advantage of the flux happening.

Shout out to Linx and him planting his flag

Skaak: The Crimean skirmish seems the perfect place to start.  So much conflict.  So much opportunity.  And also, I wanted to ride a horse.

I don’t think we’ve ever seen the Doctor called on claiming to speak for humanity, have we?

Logan’s an idiot for being determined to have this battle.  But I suppose it’s in character for British command at that time

The battle looks cool if a little too Lord of the Rings inspired

The Doctor knocked that kid out just to keep him alive.  That’s compassionate

Dan running around wielding a wok is cute.

Nice arial show of Dan climbing the scaffolding

So is this how Swarm and Azure always travel?  Just anti-fluxing?

Who’s passenger now

Atropos is where it all began and where it will all begin again

I don’t think we’ve ever gotten to see Sontarans go full on slaughter before

Logan is a coward pretending to be dead

Nice carryover of the hand pads from SOntaran stratagem

I like the parallel of Dan and The Doctor sneaking on different Sontaran ships at the same time

Massive coincidence that Dan pressed the button that connected the Sontaran ships through time

Funny that Dan thought they were talking about Japanese food

Dan’s worried about the Doctor getting access to his phone’s photos

If the Crimea is the pilot scheme how are the maps already changed

Doctor:  What resources do you have.

Dan: A wok.

Doctor:  I’m sorry… what?

The imperial Sontaran Time Carrier.  Probably the same ship the Doctor is in

Would a Sontaran really fall for the look behind you trick

Vinder and Yaz both ended up here how?  Was it a coincidence in both cases?

The Swarm has a lovely Anthony Stewart Head vibe.  He’s giving this a lot more than a standard monster role requires

So Swarm has met Yaz later in her timestream

He’s playful in a weirdly likjeable way

Who or what is passenger

They were quantum locked against Swarm and Azure after… last time…

So this temple of Atropos hoilds time in check somehow and Swarm wants to stop that

Dan’s pretty brave about being executed

Karvanista:  I’ve still got a human in this fight.

The Doctor:  I’m going to need a pointy stick.

All this new info about Sontaran suits doesn’t contradict what we’ve already known about them

Tom Baker basically told us this same info

She trusts Mrs. Seacole to remember how to sabotage the gas lines, but not the Lieutenant General

We’ve never seen a Sontaran plugged into their probic bvent before.  They’re showing us a lot of stuff we’ve always known about nut never seen

Karvanista and Dan make a fun pair

The SOntarans got through in the second before the shield was sealed

Kasrvanista can fly a Sontaran ship

This is very much like the end of Somtaran experiment that suddenly becomes the end of Christmas Invasion

Ramming all the other SOntaran ships is an effective plan.  Does this mean none of the time changes happen?  Should the map not have changed?

What is happening to the TARDIS?

Temporal implosion… does that mean none of this happened?

The Lupari are going to stay and defend Earth

Now there’s growths and webbing in addition to black goo in the TARDIS.  What’s happeniung to it?

And the TARDIS is pulled to the temple of Atropos on the planet Time

Spatio Temporal readings at zero should put them at the gateway, shouldn’t it?

The temple is broken and the Mouri are failing.  They’re holding time together and now it’s falling apart.

Wow, great cliffhanger!  All of time is about to flow through Yaz and Vinder

Notes on - Doctor Who: Joy to the World

Doctor Who – Joy to the World notes. The Queen’s Hotel – Manchester 1940 I quite like Basil and Mrs. Basil Why are we in WWII again? Basil: It’s the end of everything, you know. Everything we hold dear.   Democracy itself will fall. I hate Pumpkin Latte Aren’t those locked doors pretty much always just connecting rooms? Orient Express – Italy – 1962 Do a lot of people read Murder on the Orient Express on the Orient   Express?   Bit on the nose. OK, we’re opening with a montage of the Doctor bursting in on various time periods and places to offer them the same lukewarm toastie and pumpkin Latte.   That’s a pretty clever way to establish the concept of the hotel from the back door, as it were MOTOE is a much thicker book than that.   And she has handwritten pages Base camp – Everest 1953.   Is there only one base camp? Sandringham Hotel – London 2024.   So, time of airing then. I’m not loving Joy’s outfit Apparently the...

Notes on - American Gods: Tears of the Wrath-Bearing Tree

Tears of the wrath bearing tree notes Eggs with two yolks always freak me out What’s with the boxer walking in and out? Bilquis needs to find ‘the other’ and convince him he isn’t alone? They’re really lening into the fluid in slow motion shots. OK, the wax forming the US was cool.   And a nice visual to introduce the concept of the exact center of the US So who is Shadow’s other?   Laura?   TB?   Wednesday?   We saw all three of them Shadow jiust claimed the ravens as his own. That was a pretty tenuous description for him to recognize Laura from, but then he did know she was headed to kill Wednesday ****   One shock at a time. He’s still Crispin Glover.   I thought he was only supposed to be in one episode this season.   I wonder what the real reason for the casting changes was How did he convince Laura to go the the Gods place? World very carefully told Laura that Shadow was there and then played every reverse psyc...

Notes on - Doctor Who: The Well

The Well Notes The Doctor and Belinda are trying to get back to 5/24/25 after just one vindicator reading.   That seems optimistic, but it is a good way to remind audience of the basic setup of ‘stop and take readings. Belinda is very methodical and logical. Good skill set for a nurse. Belinda: Have we been invaded? Or hit by a meteor? Or swatted by a giant moth? The Doctor: Oh.   Imagine a moth that big! I love how healthy Belinda’s relationship with her parents is *** I will meet your mum and dad. And I will make your dad laugh. And your mum can whistle at my behind. And I will sing.   I will do the singing. That is a promise. So a second triangulation reading from the vindicator 500,000 years in the future She’s asking good questions and it’s allowing the Doctor to   give his standard ‘humans are awesome’ shtick, but is also very cleverly letting them slip in the required ‘The TARDIS translates’ explanation. OK, I am officially in love w...
