Notes on - Doctor Who: Flux - Village of the Angels

Flux Village of the Angels notes

Devon, Nov 1967

Very pretty blue

I’m not loving the overtones of Hide

Nov. 21

Cool visual of the phone box back lit

The lie detector is measuring absolute truth, not what Claire believes/

Claire Brown

A little girl named Peggy is missing

Claire was born May 13, 1985.  Great moment when she say’s that to a lie detector in 1967

What is the professor testing, exactly?

I like Claire.

What is Claire experiencing here?

Oh, that’s the angel talking through Claire

***The Angel has the TARDIS.

Very cool flickering lights in the TARDIS with Angel moving.  This is a bit deus ex machiona technobabble just to get them over the cliffhanger.

The Doctor:  It does have an element of risk

Dan: How big an element

The Doctor:  Well, pretty big.  The only element, really.

Nice tri-split screen for the blink

Dan reacts to danger a lot like Jamie used to.  He just shrugs and ghets on with it

Have we ever seen someone trying to use the call box

I like the way they remember that Yaz has cop training every time it comes time to interview someone.  She does it exactly the way a cop would

It’s happening again.

Count the stones – very Stones of Blood

The Professor keeps his own bees

The Institute of Psychic Investigations

Professore Eustacius Jericho.

Who’s George Elliot?

What Experiment was he running?

Percipiant is a good word.

The image of an angel becomes an angel.  Or ‘can’ now.

Amazing visual of Claire looking up and seeing the angel wings on her back.  I bet there’s already a snapchat filter for that

So older Peggy is spreading notes to get people to leave to break the cycle.

Such a nice and simple representation of people disappearing

Is there suntext here that Gerald isn’t taking Yaz’ advice because she’s a woman of color.

Dan:  Maybe she’s not missing.  Maybe she just ran to get away from him.

The Angel looks like a scarecrow in the distance.  That’s a new one

I like how the Angels keep quite successfully snatching people.

Bel is still out in the Lupari ship looking for Vinder and showing us how completely trashed all of space is.

Puzano had canals

So it’s like Planet Venice

The guy on Puzano is just the right level

NOPP – I’m Namaca Ost Parvess Po

Bel:  Bel.

NOPP:  Nice.  Shorter.  Better.

They have ¼ of a sun, third of a moon, half a planet.  A poetic description but not really a scientific one.

Nioce that Namaca is dressed vaguely venetian, and also that this brief hope of hookinmg up with Bel comes and goes

Love this house

The Angels threw the rock to lure him outside.  Wait, did they just explain the cold open with Sally Sparrow?

They always have to give the little Angels Tutorial speech in these.

I’d been assuming that this is Claire earlier in her timestream, but it turns out that she’d just had premonitions before her appearance in episode one.  Her timestream isn’t out of sync with the Doctors.  That’s disappointing.

She’s been in the 60s for two years

Would they have had a television as small and portable as that in 1967.

Something about the delivery of ‘Are they really ringing the doorbell?’ is hysterical/.

Nice usage of Claire knowing that everyone in this village disappears on this day and also did in 1901

And now stone dust from Claire’s eye.  They’re hitting all the angels’ greatest hits

It feels like time is way too linear for what Swarm and Azure said had happened last week.  Should it be this coherent?

I wish they’d at least just mention that it’s odd time isn’t more fucked up.

They set up the 1901 info at just the right moment for us to know where Dan and Yaz are

Dan is pretty quick to know that she’s Peggy

It makes sense that the Angels would need two quantum extraction points, one from where they grab people and one from when they send people back to, in order to get the energy

You have to stay in the village, you musn’t go beyond the sign

Ah.  Time is all fucked up, these are just isolated extracted safe spaces

Very cool image of the village hanging in space.

Gerald:  What do you think gives you the right to speak to me like that, Jean.

Jean:  Forty-seven years of pain, Gerald.

Again, really great visual of the universe

Have we ever seen someone hug the Angel instead of vice versa? I don’t think we have

Ah, older Peggy is safe because they already told her they were leaving her alone.

So ‘being observed’ also includes watching a CC feed.

Escaping the screen takes a lot of effort.

Nice way to explain what’s happening to the angel sketch via the TV disussionm

The flaming angel image is just SO COOL

And now Claire is turning into Angel parts like Amy thought she was

The premonition of an Angel counted as containing the image of an angel.  That’s clever.

It’s very Doctor-y for her to be impressed by Professor Jericho’s ability to handle stress and still be curious.

Now they’re doing to mind meld from Girl in the Fireplace

Professor J. liberated the concentration camps

He must have been planning to experiment on her psychic powers in some way.  Hence explaining the leather head helmets

Again, the image of the Doctor and  Claire/Angel on the dual beach is just beautiful.

Specifically the Angel that hijacked the TARDIS is the one on Claire’s mind.

A weeping Angel is asking the Doctor for help.  That’s a bit of a sci-fi trope.

So this is not the Angel that grabbed Claire in 2021.  Another one did to trty to capture the rogue weeping angel.  Interesting

These Angels are an extraction squad and work for the Division.  That’s big

And the savior for these people turns out to be Azure, tricking them into a passenger form.  Fortunately, Bel recognizes what’s really happening.  Why do the Ravagers want all these people inside Passengers?

There’s a bit of an echo of Utopia

Oh, Bel was deployed against passenger forms before.

So now Bel knows what Azure looks like, and that she’s not a friend

It makes sense that my dude is pissed about Bel stripping away his false hope.  Sad, but makes sense.

The crumbling universe is closing in on them

Dan’s asking good questions , just to focus the audience on what they are.

Ah, Gerald and Jean have finally found Peggy

Nobody survives it twice.  That’s a change

Peggy:  He was never nice to me.

That’s a bit sociopath-y

Yaz asks the smart question regarding, OK, what else is weird?  Let’s check that out.

The transition to angel leaping out of the TV screen is just gorgeous.  There is such good imagery in this one.

The lie detector lines drawinmg an Angel is pretty meaninmgless, but god it looks so cool.  The visuals in this are just wonderful.

So this Angel ran away from Division like the Doctor did.  Interesting bond

The Division uses anything it can.  No moral high ground at all.

The Angel agrees to leave Claire if the Doctor fights off the Angels for it.

What knowledge does this Angel have that they’re trying to protect.  It says ‘Everything.’ Including all of the Doctor’s missing memories.  It’s offering that in exchange for protection.

Professor:  Sorry.  Threw a cup at you.

There’s a secret tunnel from the basement out to a lovers meeting point.

What’s putting the helmets on the angels do, other than give them an excuse to say ‘reverse the polarity of the neutron flow.’

Angel wings on the tunnel walls.

The Angel hands reaching out of the walls are very Mummenchanz

Burial site from the stone age is an Angel ship that just arrived yesterday

Mrs. Hayward is Peggy

How does Peggy growing up there work if they’re extracted from time.  Part of time collapsiong I guess.

They left them alive because they’re cruel and want them to have witnesses

Flickering lights are so the Angels thing

And the Angels win and get the Professor.  They’re really winning all over the place.

Professor:  Mrs Hayward.  You appear to be.. at night…

Chilling moment when the Doctor realizes they aren’t following her out of there stone ship

Nioce reveal that the tunnel comes out where the Dan/Yaz conversation is happening.

Claire can sense that ‘her’ angel has been talking to the others.

The Doctor thinks she’s sacrificuing her chance to get her memories back ion exchange for getting everyone put back in the right place.

But one last rug pull, the rogue angel has traded the Doctor for her own freedom.

Claire:  You are recalled.  To Division.

What is the connection between the Time Lords and the Weeping Angels?  There certainly seems to be one based on End of Time pt.2

The Doctor turning into an Angel.  What?  Looks cool though/.

Mid credits interruption to show that time really is fucked up!

Also, that’s the William Hartnell closing music.  Nice touch

Vinder has found what’s his face on Space Venice

Lovely bit of scriupting that he’s finally come to terms with the idea that she saved his left

Recording cutting out just before Bel says where’s she’s headed.  BUT – Vinder did just meet Passenger forms himself.  Surely he’ll put that together.

No Swarm this week.

Notes on - Star Trek Deep Space Nine: Extreme Measures

Extreme Measures notes   Bashir gets the opening log.   Odo is still super sick with the changeling sickness.   Good to establish the stakes right away Odo wants to know exactly how much time he has left. Odo is being all noble in character and wanting Kiri to go fight the rebellion without him Nice that he admits that he just doesn’t want her to watch him die.   And a little selfless of him.   Also, nice callback to Barreil Odo:   I don’t want the last thing I see to be pain in your eyes. This is skirting melodrama in a sappy way, but they get away with it The Breen weapon is still a thing going on in the background Way to play subtle, Julian. Genocide is an extreme measure Miles has decided to come clean with their plan to dupe section 31 to come to them and that the federation created the disease They’re filling the audience in on the whole lure section 31 plot already set up and bringing everybody up to speed so that they can get on with the story they’r
