Notes on - Doctor Who: Eve of the Daleks

Eve of the Daleks notes

It’s also the extended version like Flux 1

I like that you can obviously see that three should be an S on the sign but we don’t find that out until later

Nick is very happy to hear she hates Jeff.  That’s an efficient way to establish he has a crush on her

Sara

Is it actually possible to not be able to silent your phone?

Sara is really selling Nick being an old customer that she finds vaguely exhausting

Nick’s attempts to prolong their conversation are both creepy and sweet

Sarah clearly hates her work.  Is Nick really her ONLY customer?

Nick:  Won’t be long.  See you next year.

Sarah:  Ugh.  Have you been practicing that?

Nick:  (Sadly)  …Yes.

I like that they’re dealing with lingering threads from Flux RE: The TARDIS being trashed and still having all the doors.  It would be nice if they’d given us a hint they weren’t just dropping that

I’d love to play chess with a fish.

Shouldn’t there be a safer way to trigger this reset without having to be inside?  Still, the cisuals of the walls turning is really cool.

Yaz and Dan are united in their contempt for Manchester

Wow those are huge storage units.  Not very efficient use of space either.  Sarah must have very reasonable rates

Honestly startling to see Nick killed this fast

I have questions regarding Sarah and her mom’s relationship.  Her mom’s uncle left the storage pplace to Sarah?  OK

They’re setting up the importance of her mom’s later phone call quite well.

I’m not sure they ever reallyt pay off the annoying text alerts thing

It’s so rare that they can afford to show the Daleks just instantly killing everyone

I don’t like the Daleks’ new machine gun

Nice close to the clod open with them dying.  Good hook.

And we’re back at the start of the time loop.  But wait, everyone realizes they’re in  a time loop, not just one of them.

Nice use of dutch angles

Nice that everyone knows they’re in a loop.  Also sweetr that Nick’s instinct is to go rescue Sarah

Nice effect covering the front doors from escape

What does it say about Jeff that she assumes Jeff will have weapons?

And everybody has total free will every time to do different thingsm which is a nice twist

For never appearing, Jeff is quite a presence

The montage of Jeff breaking literally every storage role is cute.  Is it wrong that Beef and beans sounds good to me?

They keep reestablishing that a call between Sarah and her mum needs to happen at midnight.  Nicely seeded.

Refreshing how quickly they all are to figure out and accept that they’re in a time loop.

The number after 11:50 qorrespondes to the number of loops, which is helpful

The Doctor:  Time loop.

Yaz:  Time loop.

Dan:  Groundhog day.  (awkward pause)  Same difference.

Sarah:  No no no.  Were stuck in a time loop.  With killer robots.

Nick:  OK, that makes sense.

Sarah:  Does it?

Cute that Nick assumes the best motivations for what Sarah was doing, when she was just looking out for herself really.

I’m not sure what building control from the council is.  I can in fer from context well enough for it to not matter

Sarah’s mad that it might be the Doctor’s robot just because she knows its name.  That’s a very funny response to the situation

Very funny gag where Sarah tells Nick to stop being patronizing and he responds by using her as a shield.  That’s solid comedy

LOVE that Sarah addresses how serial killer Nick’s stprage looks.

Yaz:  You have a lot of ex-girlfriends.  They’re… aline still… aren’t they?

Nick:  Oh, God, Of course.  Of course.

It’s kind of sweet that Nick is going to the effort to not trhrow ex girlfriend’s stuff away.

Sarah:  You’re the reason I’m trapped here with a…a..a robot…

Everyone: Dalek!

Sarah:  With a stupidly named robot!

*** Just Throw Stuff Away!!

Sarah being cruel literally drove Nick to suicide.

She said my Giddy Aunt.  Troughton shoutout.

Callback to resonating concrete

Love that the Doctor decides to use the loop as a tool.

Very nice twist that the loop is one minute shorter each time

Yaz:  Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

The Doctor:  Not sure.  Definitely one of those.

The Doctor’s plan is that none of them should come back to Nick’s space on the next loop, but guilt drives Sarah to save him anyway

4th time around – starts at 11:54.  This time they establish that if they get out of the building they’ll be clear of the loop.

Dan:  You saved the entire universe last week.  I think I owe you one.

Sarah’s willing to abandon the Doctor, Yaz and Dan. But cares enough about Nick to rescue him.  Mostly guilt, but it’s progress.

Dan is pretending to be a customer who thinks that the Dalek is a computer employess

Sarah hasn’t spoken to her mother since August.  That’s kind of dark and sad.

Good on Sarah for coming clean about not having tried to save Nick

Sarah’s trying to be a better person.  Sweet

Sarah says that even close friends and family wouldn’t have bothered to save her.  That some seriously dark implied backstory.

Yaz is still waiting for the moment on the beach when the Doctor tells her everything that’s happened.  She just wants reassurance that the Doctor feels close to her

It’s nice that the rule here absolutely is that if the Dalek finds you, it kills you

Sarah isn’t apparently against Nick having a crush on her

Sarah:  That is so stalker-y.

Nick:  I prefer unrequited.

And now on loop four, a second Dalek.  Who confirms that the time loop is a result of the TARDIS reset.  Which we’d kind of assumed but is nice to have confirmed.

The Daleks monitored the time loop and sent a soldier to kill the Dalek in retribution for all the Daleks dying in the flux.  But.. if they all were destroyed, who’s taking retribution exactly?

Dan’s simple pleasure at being alive again is sweet.  He’s very Jamie.

The fifth loop starts at 23:55

The Doctor upbraids Sarah for not following the plan, but Sarah didn’t because she wanted to save Nick instead.

**** My friend Lauren says that good hearted weirdos are actually the keepers.

LOVE the twist that the shrinking loop means that if they don’t save Nick in this iteration they wont be able to go back far enough to save him and he’ll really be dead.

Such a good twist on the format

Have we ever seen someone trick the Daleks into shooting each other like that before?  It’s such a sci-fi cliché but I don’t think it’s ever been used against them before.

The Doctor’s appreciatuion for Nick’s simple plan of ducking is sweet

So who put the force field on the front door?  Was that the Daleks or the TARDIS?  They don’t really say.

SO great that Sarah’s first thought is to talk to her insurance carrier.

Yaz and Dan have such a nice bond at this point.

Sarah feels so believable as a flawed person

And now there are three Daleks

Loop six starts badly.  The Dalek knocks out the power and kills Sarah right away

And Nick dies right away

GOD BLESS DAN for noticing Yaz’ feelings an supporting her

Oh yeah.  Dan had known her for four years now, hasn’t he

Yaz has never come out to herself.  That’s real.

And Yaz and Dan got smoked right away in this loop as well.

Loop 7 – The Doctor is pissed and Jeff keeps fireworks in the basement.

The Doctor is admitting that this is her fault.

Is it cool for Dan to tell the Doctor about Yaz’ feelings?  Good that he refuses to let Yaz or the Doctor lie to themselves.

The S fell off.  That’s just classic.

Loop 8 will be a decoy loop

Sarah goes upstairs and shows change by being the one who calls her mum instead of the other way around

Not a fan of Sarah’s sweater

The Dalek just destroyed all of Nick’s Ex-Girlfriends stuff.  ‘Ex.  Terminated.’  Cute.

Sarah basically just said ‘call me in 50 seconds’

This is the perfect structure for a COVID production

The Doctor tricked the dalek into firing on the explosives and blowing things up by having a videochat of Sarah’s mum show up.  Nice.

Dan’s really rooting for Yaz and The Doctor.

Is that the guy from Woman who fell to Earth?

It’s sweet that Mary and Nick like one another.

Notes on - Doctor Who: Joy to the World

Doctor Who – Joy to the World notes. The Queen’s Hotel – Manchester 1940 I quite like Basil and Mrs. Basil Why are we in WWII again? Basil: It’s the end of everything, you know. Everything we hold dear.   Democracy itself will fall. I hate Pumpkin Latte Aren’t those locked doors pretty much always just connecting rooms? Orient Express – Italy – 1962 Do a lot of people read Murder on the Orient Express on the Orient   Express?   Bit on the nose. OK, we’re opening with a montage of the Doctor bursting in on various time periods and places to offer them the same lukewarm toastie and pumpkin Latte.   That’s a pretty clever way to establish the concept of the hotel from the back door, as it were MOTOE is a much thicker book than that.   And she has handwritten pages Base camp – Everest 1953.   Is there only one base camp? Notes on - Billions: Pilot

Billions notes  Yeah, that first scene is a lot US Attorney’s office SDNY Kate giving the intro talk to some guy named Michael. Bryan was the one who gave her that speech 18 months ago Chuck is already playing with recommendations for judicial appointments Ari Spyros.   FCC here to introduce Bobby as the antagonist Lots of dry insider trading stuff Would they really introduce a possible crime with a head shot? Meanwhile Bobby is introduced enjoying pizza with his wife and being a good guy.   In contrast to Chuck getting burned and pissed on. It’s not believable that Lara hasn’t ever tried Bobby’s favorite pizza before at this point in their marriage. And now Bobby is saving his childhood pizza place from going under out of altruism.    They’re really leaning against type. And from there to Axe Capital Mick Danzig and Ben Kim And now they’re demonstrating that Bobby is smarter Bobby:   Yale? Ben:   Stanford.  ...
