Notes on Doom Patrol - Casey Patrol

Casey Patrol notes

Wait – animation opening sequence?  WTF?

Torminox

Inevitable.  Nice Thanos reference.

OK, Dorothy’s telling the story.

Wait, she’s telling a different story.

Museum in an impossible place

Horst Eisman.  Was that who Niles traded the necklace?  I don’t remember the details

It took me way too lonmg to clock that these were the Dannyzens

Hey there, Candlemaker.

It’s really frustrating that they just dropped the DP plotline with no explanation

You can tell she hadn’t really gotten back in touch with her father

*** No matter how impossible the odds may seem, love always wins out.

They very discretely did not utter or show the entirety of the gay slur written underneath fuck off and die.  That was tasatefully handled

They’re fighting hate with colorful murals.  That’s sweet, but feels like it would never work

Explain bona to vada

Oh, ok.  That’s how they’re all living inside Danny the Ambulance.  I’d been wondering

Where’s flex?

Maura is concerned that Danny is nearing maximum occupancy

Looks like Dorothy has come down with a bad case of teenage girl

What’s up with the metal insects?

Maura:  If I promise not to ask if you’re OK, can I come in?

Love Maura calling Dorothy out ever so gently for not asking about why she had a bad day

Such a love letter to drag queens

Dorothy’s such a moody kid right now.

More than ever people need a safe space to come home to.  Amen  Which is kind of the point of the episode, that you can’t hide forever.

I hope the Dannyzens aren’t dead.  They all dropped so suddenly

Space Case – a comic book hero

No tea, no shame

Maura:  Excuse me, miss Thing.  This Veruca Salt routine is getting real tired, so maybe pull it back a tad, okay?

Dorothy feels like she’s right back in a prison, and that Niles would want her to be there.

If you don’t feel like we understand what you’re going through, maybe try to find someone who can.  That’s really good advice.

How did she not cut her hands crushing the metal bug?

Asa Diamonds.  Love it.

So the bugs gave everyone robot faces

So how did the comic book foot soldiers get into reality in the first place.

Dorothy is VERY defemsive about not using the Candlemaker

Nice visual of Casey removed from the comic image

Space Case – did she just defeat all the Vetra foot soldiers in an instant?

Torminox is in the real world, outside of Danny

Thank you Maura, for asking about the wellbeing of their friends.  Nobody else thought to

Space Case: Do you have a hyper-speed capable, titanium alloy, intergalactic starship?

Maura:  It’s in the shop.

Casey has never experienced smell or hunger

Maura:  OK, Sweetie, you’re up at a Katy Perry, and I’m going to need you to bring it way down to an Alicia Keys.

This is the opposite of last week.  Fiction is being brought into reality instead of vice versa

Maura:  Is this Tampax?

Dorothy: Torminox.

Maura: Whatever

Torminox was Richard Frinke before he got turned into super villain Torminox

Should you tell someone that they’re fictional

Again, how did Torminox become real in the first place?

Dorothy is all excited to see Space Case use her powers until Maura reminds her that that’s one of her friends.

Maura:  (Drop kicks a possessed Dannyzen out cold) Sorry, boo!

It’s fuzzy what the rules are for Casey in this new universe

The animation is really good 2d pics in 3d.  Neat.  Is anime always like this?

Dorothy explaining mortality to Casey.

The artificial leg is an interesting detail.

Dorothy got the Space Case comics from Flex Mentallo.  Nice that they mentioned him

Dorothy is very attached to the necklace.

What did Torminox just do to Danny?

T. genuinely didn’t expect to see Casey here.  Does he know that he’s in reality?  Is that tied in to how he got here?  That would explain his different attitude to her

Why does Candlemaker have every right to hate Dorothy right now?

He’s clearly her case of last resort

Candlemaker is a box too.  Does that mean he can be saved like Danny?

Someone drew a penis on the mural already

Hesitating when it comes to your father clearly hits home for Dorothy

Clearly there’s more emotional depth in this real world than in Space Case’s comic

She was stopped by the memory of being pushed by her dad on a swing.

There’s always a way to reach someone, just ask Dorothy.  We don’t know what a huge double meaning ‘it’s true, you can’ has

The kid was trying to fix the mural, not damage it further.  That’s honestly touching

New mural revealed of him pushing her on the swing, trying to get in touch with the good dad inside

But it didn’t work

Good on Maura for picking up on Dorothy’s verb tense

Dorothy locked away all of her imaginary friends because they rewminded her too much of her father.  Everything does.

Dorothy’s speech about her anger at Niles for being gone is brilliantly written

Dorothy:  I want to say all of these things to him.  But maybe some things are better left unsaid.  She needs her dad.  Fuck you for turning your back on that.

Danny’s sorry he couldn’t protect them, but Maura’s right, he can’t protect them from everything

Are there still good people in the world?

She’s right.  Hiding in a safe space is never going to change the world out there for the better.

Ooo, nice usage of the real world metaphor.  Comic/reality, Queer safe spaces, the rest of the world

What’s that song from?

Casey wants to find who wrote the Space Case comic and make them re-write it better

So Dorothy and Casey are off on the road together

And they’re heading to meet up with the rest of the gang

Maura looks so proud

The Space Case artist is drawing a scissorman!

Oh, ok.  This was happening at the same time as Nostalgia patrol and now Dr. Janus and Torminex are both handing over their prizes to the real power who’s working toward Immortus’ rising

Torminox wants to be turned back into Casey’s dad.

The swinging image was flipped.  Significant?

Notes on - Doctor Who: Joy to the World

Doctor Who – Joy to the World notes. The Queen’s Hotel – Manchester 1940 I quite like Basil and Mrs. Basil Why are we in WWII again? Basil: It’s the end of everything, you know. Everything we hold dear.   Democracy itself will fall. I hate Pumpkin Latte Aren’t those locked doors pretty much always just connecting rooms? Orient Express – Italy – 1962 Do a lot of people read Murder on the Orient Express on the Orient   Express?   Bit on the nose. OK, we’re opening with a montage of the Doctor bursting in on various time periods and places to offer them the same lukewarm toastie and pumpkin Latte.   That’s a pretty clever way to establish the concept of the hotel from the back door, as it were MOTOE is a much thicker book than that.   And she has handwritten pages Base camp – Everest 1953.   Is there only one base camp? Sandringham Hotel – London 2024.   So, time of airing then. I’m not loving Joy’s outfit Apparently the...

Notes on - American Gods: Tears of the Wrath-Bearing Tree

Tears of the wrath bearing tree notes Eggs with two yolks always freak me out What’s with the boxer walking in and out? Bilquis needs to find ‘the other’ and convince him he isn’t alone? They’re really lening into the fluid in slow motion shots. OK, the wax forming the US was cool.   And a nice visual to introduce the concept of the exact center of the US So who is Shadow’s other?   Laura?   TB?   Wednesday?   We saw all three of them Shadow jiust claimed the ravens as his own. That was a pretty tenuous description for him to recognize Laura from, but then he did know she was headed to kill Wednesday ****   One shock at a time. He’s still Crispin Glover.   I thought he was only supposed to be in one episode this season.   I wonder what the real reason for the casting changes was How did he convince Laura to go the the Gods place? World very carefully told Laura that Shadow was there and then played every reverse psyc...

Notes on - Doctor Who: The Well

The Well Notes The Doctor and Belinda are trying to get back to 5/24/25 after just one vindicator reading.   That seems optimistic, but it is a good way to remind audience of the basic setup of ‘stop and take readings. Belinda is very methodical and logical. Good skill set for a nurse. Belinda: Have we been invaded? Or hit by a meteor? Or swatted by a giant moth? The Doctor: Oh.   Imagine a moth that big! I love how healthy Belinda’s relationship with her parents is *** I will meet your mum and dad. And I will make your dad laugh. And your mum can whistle at my behind. And I will sing.   I will do the singing. That is a promise. So a second triangulation reading from the vindicator 500,000 years in the future She’s asking good questions and it’s allowing the Doctor to   give his standard ‘humans are awesome’ shtick, but is also very cleverly letting them slip in the required ‘The TARDIS translates’ explanation. OK, I am officially in love w...
